I think it was Ramses II who said that "If you are going to build a shrine to yourself, there's really not much use in being subtle about the whole thing."

01/15/2006 - How often does this happen?
So I'm hanging out with my brother-in-law and we go have lunch with one of his friends. I'm all about Internet anonymity, so we'll call this friend... Stan. Back to the story, so we go to a steakhouse and Stan who isn't in the greatest shape healthwise, orders catfish. When it comes, he procedes to take the salt shaker and apply so much salt the catfish looked like it had been snowed on. At least a tablespoon of salt. He eats the whole thing. But wait, there's more... He added another teaspoon or so of salt to the dipping mayonaise, so as not to dilute the salt already on the fish while eating it. Claims he doesn't taste it, has his blood checked every two weeks (other medical conditions), eats every meal this way. He has a lower blood pressure then you do.

01/13/2006 - Netflix
Perhaps one of the best new businesses lately, Netflix really does rock. Well, mostly. The way it works is you get an "unlimited" number of rentals. You build a list of movies you want to see, and then they start sending them to you, depending on you plan, two or three at a time. when you are done with a movie, you mail it back to them, then they check it back into their system, and send you the next movie on their list. they take great pride in that they can get the next movie in the mail to you the same day they check-in your previous movie. That's where they streech the truth. when you mail back a movie, they hold it for 2-4 days, then check it back in, thus throttling the total movies you can see in any month. I'm ok with 8 or 12 movies a month* but don't LIE TO ME and call it an unlimited service.

Netflix is currently tied up in a lawsuit because of this, and based on their proposed settlement, it's clear they have no respect for their customers and have learned nothing from why their customers are mad at them.

* I rarely watch TV anymore, I turn the TV on every other day or so when I get a new netfix movie.

01/13/2006 - Where is my Media-Macmini for the living room TV?
It's time we accept that Apple will probabaly NOT make a TiVo like device no matter what our wishes are. It goes directly against the relationships Apple is building with it's content providers (Record labels, TV & Movie studios) to build a device that allows consumers to record content without "paying the man." It also doesn't make any financial sense for Apple, as they get a cut of all the content they sell, and based on their sales numbers, I'm sure they don't want to give any of that up.

While there are only a handful of companies that could pull off an "insanely great" easy to use hardware/software Tivo like PVR functionality, asking this of a company whose quarterly results and stock price are tied to keeping the content houses happy is simply unrealistic dreaming.

Hence, no Media-Mini with recording capabilities, and no RadioShark-like FM recording capabilities on the new Ipod Remote.

01/13/2006 - the new intel powered PowerBook, i.e. the MacBook Pro
I HATE the name

What was wrong with PowerBook?

macBook, Bleeech!

That's for the 15", is the 17" the BigMacbook?
or do you just order a 15" and then tell them to "Supersize it!"

Since we are getting rid of the word power, does the desktop model formerly known as a PowerMac become the MacMac?

I can see the commercial now - a man is whining to a friend about how his computer keeps having problems - mysteriously, there is a duck in the background, he keeps whining and finally says "what should i do?" His friend shruggs and the duck quacks "MacMac!" then the Apple logo fades in.

As for me, I'll wait; let the Public Beta Testers, errrrrrrr, customers who buy the first wave of these find the problems, and when they have a version 2.0, I'll be interested.
